World Philosophers Day

Today is World Philosophers Day! The start of science, psychology, and sociology as we know it all started with these individuals. So, In order to honor them and their special day, I decided to give you all some knowledge on the start of psychology and what these guys contributed.

Hippocrates

Started the idea that the right side of the brain controls the left side of the body and vise versa. He wrote a book talking about observing symptoms of many mental illnesses we have now like depression and paranoia. His reasoning for these symptoms was that there were four “humors” blood, two biles, and phlegm (corresponding to the four elements) in our bodies. The individual would have said symptoms if the levels weren’t balanced. Too much yellow, and an individual would be easily angered. If the person showed signs of depression, they might have too much black. Too much phlegm meant the person showed no emotion. Too much blood suggested the individual would be manic. His solution to this problem was bloodletting to balance out the levels.

Galen

He suggested that individuals could control their symptoms once they understood themselves. He was the first individual to suggest that people needed an outside perspective on themselves and described the therapeutic relationship.

Aristotle

Developed basic principles of memory that are still fundamental to current theories. He said that memory results from three processes (similarity, contrast, and contiguity). The strength of an association is influenced by the frequency and the ease of the formation. His ideas on how drama and the theatre have an effect on the audience (draws out emotions) became central to Freud’s theory of catharsis.

Obviously, there are more philosophers who have made contributions to psychology and counseling, but these three are some of the most popular ones! Who is your favorite philosopher?
